iron on edge banding is actually quite robust, almost every kitchen cabinet made in the last 40 years has this stuff.
use plenty of heat, a j roller and it will last for years
solid wood edging glued with wood glue is better but much more time consuming
It works! No worries!
I will say however, it is best to clean the edges of the stock to be banded. As in removing all sawdust, oils or whatever. I vacuum and wipe with Acetone first. Not sure if the Acetone is really needed but what I do.
I cannot find the instructions at the moment so no help but the proper amount of heat is important. Maybe somebody can help you out that has this information at the tip of their tongue... Sorry, I do not do it that often to remember all the details. All I know is I never had a failure using it.
As I recall the banding I get had an instruction sheet inside the wrapper.
I trust the glue on the banding a lot more than I do contact cement. Contact cement and veneer are a temporary thing.

I have used the Iron on banding and really like it. I trust it far more than contact cement. But I far prefer gluing on 1/4"- 3/8" solid stock over either of the above.
Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

elmer , Iron on edge banding is meant to be ironed on , not contact cemented .
That's why they call it iron on .

One way to strengthen the bond of iron-on banding is to size the substrate with a pva glue prior to attaching the band. I simply smear on a uniform coat of Titebond 2 with my finger. Let it dry. Then apply the banding. The pva will soften and get sticky when heated with the iron as will the hot melt that comes attached to the banding. I've never had a failure due to any "incompatibility" issues between the two different glues.
Hot hide glue will also work in lieu of pva.
