I applied a coat of velvet oil to a cherry chest and not too happy with the flat finish. I applied the first coat and kept the wood wet as directed and then removed it after the prescribed time. More research and I read where I should have let it dry more and then remove the remainder of the oil. My question now is, if I add a light coat of the oil again and when it starts to dry I then buff it out will this correct the problem, of should I just let the first coat cure and then buff it out? Would appreciate any help. Time is running out as the chest is a wedding gift and it is only a few days away. Thanks

Velvit oil is an oil-varnish blend and is designed to be wiped off and produce a flat, in the wood finish. If this is not what you want, you may have the wrong product. However, you can add a varnish over the top either by brushing or wiping and produce a higher-sheen film forming finish.

Hammer's link is to a very good article. Anyone interested oil/varnish or wiping varnish should read that. Take notes even.
