My 1/2″ straight cut bit has bit the dust. I have a new metal bit — 1/2 ” end mill. Any concerns about using it in a router to cut pine?

Carbide or HSS. HSS will burn up at high rpms. Endmills are designed to work best at lower speeds and the geometry is different than a router bit. 4 flute endmills are going to be slow. I use 2 flute HSS endmills at 5000 rpm in my slot mortiser.
I think the one I have is Carbide. I have to check. I do use HSS Dovetail bits because they give a minimum diameter for dovetails that look closer to hand-cut than the "chunkier" carbide tipped bits. They do not burn up. I believe the End mill is two flute. I only planned on using it until I could get a 1/2" router bit.Greg

Metal cutting end mills will work fine in wood, generally. The ones ground for aluminum will work better than those ground for steel because of the angles and "sharpness" of the cutting edge. Long cutters at high RPM can chatter if the depth of cut isn't right. Above around 8000 RPM balencing becomes an issue.
At work (my real job) we have cut aluminum at over 20,000 RPM no problem and have had problems at 3000 RPM if the conditions aren't right. Same I suspect for wood.

I used it this morning to cut finger joints in 1x10 pine. Machined very clean.Greg
