All,
We had a discussion a couple of weeks ago about the new LN chisels and if the price($50 each about) was a bit too high. As I understand it, the LN’s are copies of the old Stanley 750’s….so I decided to look specifically at used chisels at the Antique Auction up in NH the weekend of the 23-24 of April.
I did see a couple of sets of 750’s and Everlasts…the 750’s were $50 each…and the Everlasts were closer to $100 each. These were not the auction prices but the prices dealers were selling the chisels for in the parking lot. Wow!….
Yesterday I picked up a 750 1 1/2″ for $.50 cents at the local tag sale. Then spent a portion of the afternoon rehabing and getting ready to make a handle for my new addition…
Maybe the LN’s are fair priced?

You're competing with collectors when looking at 750's and Everlast's. Those chisels are not worth that much for a user. They are good, but not that good....'least that is my opinion on older Stanley chisels.
tsproul,
I did not realize the 750's and Everlasts were collector items. I buy chisels to use only....right now I have a hodge podge of old cheap stanleys, a few japanese, witherby, sorby, 750 and finally a bucks. The vast majority of needs are satisfied with 4-5 chisels. I'm interested in knowing more about them so I can fill out the array with tag sale finds...thanks
BG,
Be careful about the notion that Lie-Nielsen chisels are "copies" of the old Stanleys. Lie-Nielsen copied the basic design of the 750s, but did not use the same materials.
Those I know who have tried both say the steel used in the Lie-Nielsen tools is better than the steel in the Stanleys: they say an edge lasts much longer on the LNs and shows no tendency to fold as do the Stanleys. (I don't know this for sure, but I believe Lie-Nielsen uses A2 steel--perhaps cryo treated--which wasn't available when the Stanleys were made.)
Over on Wood Central, IIRC, there is a post by someone who has tested various chisels side by side, including both Stanley 750s and Lie-Nielsens. You might want to check it out.
