Unisaw mobile base and motor cover
All, I recently bought a used Unisaw and am looking for a couple of items to make it workable in my garage.
The first is the motor cover/door. The saw is missing the original and am looking for a replacement. I have heard the horor stories concerning the Delta customer service. Any reputable sources out there?
The second is a mobile base. The saw has an extension that is 44″ to the right of the saw table. Same question as above. Any reputable sources out there?

I think you just missed a free Delta mobile base extension listed in the link below. The Delta base is nice and Amazon and other dealers sell them.

One source for both parts is here.

That's a short extension, unless I'm misunderstanding. What's the distance from the saw's body to the legs of the extension?
After collecting opinions here with regard to getting a mobile base for my Unisaw (1998 vintage), I opted for the actual Delta base. It was very easy to assemble, and moves like a dream with the saw on it.
forestgirl, I remembered your thread but could not find it easily. Where did you get the Delta base?
It is a right tilt saw that has a Biesemeyer fence. The overall length is 7 feet with the extension to the right of the saw table 44" long. The distance to the legs from the saw cabinet is 41".
This may not be a standard configuration as there is a poor modification. Someone removed the motor cover and attached a lower shelf with L brackets. I would post a picture but the camera is at the lake.

Hi, Steve, I got the base from Amazon, $150 + $30 for shipping. I looked around, found it a little cheaper somewhere else (can't remember), but they couldn't guarantee when it would ship.
How long is your fence?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
forestgirl, the base is now $165 on Amazon. I have never dealt with them but I like the idea of guaranteed delivery.
I have not measured the fence but it is not the 50". It seems to be in the 3 foot range.
Steve
You might want to find a shorter base so you're not taking up so much room in your shop (or is your shop huge anyway?). Delta probablly makes one for a shorter fence. I'll take a look, see what's what.....forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Well, I'm not finding a Delta-made base with a short extension. Just the base all by itself, or the base with extension for 54" fence.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Same with SC -- they only make an extension for a 50" fence. Mine's shorter, so I'll have to improvise. One thing puzzles me. They tell you if you want to add legs, and have a mobile base, you must fit the legs into a base extension. However with a Delta-style base, when you actually move the saw, the rt. side of it where the legs would be rises up in the air anyway. What's the point of an extension if it doesn't take the weight when you move it? Am I missing something?

forestgirl, OK. I have given you some incorrect information. The Biesemeyer fence is the 52" model. When you asked about the lenth of the fence, I though you meant the actual fence not the rail.
I will order the Delta base. It has better reviews than the HTC.

Personally I find most of those stories to be exaggerated about poor Delta service.
You could make your own cover out of plywood or buy a stock cover from Delta. HTC makes the better mobile bases.
RickL, thanks for the input concerning the Delta service. I do not have first hand experience so all opinions are welcome. I will consider the HTC base.
Steve
There wasn't an OEM motor cover on Unisaws until the eighties or so. Depending on how old your saw is, you may have to build your own. It isn't difficult. It is just a plywood box which hangs on the side of the machine. You can even add a holster for your rip fence, and a hole for dust collection.
Jamie, thanks for the input. I have not had a chance to check the vintage yet.

I have had nothing but good luck with Delta Service. I have only had to use them twice and both times the service was outstanding.

If the cabinet motor "hole" is square go http://cgi.ebay.com/NOS-Delta-Rockwell-Unisaw-Steel-Motor-Cover-Right-Tilt_W0QQitemZ120287286785QQihZ002QQcategoryZ20789QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I purchased one before he upped the price.
Steve, The old saws had a metal cover the newer is plastic.
1- go to the delta web site with your model # and serial # as the appear on the metal tag on the back of the saw to find the precise parts diagram and age.
2- several years ago some guys bought most of the metal covers -see that Ebay guy, the price isn't too bad. I bought one of the last from amazon for my 1985 virgin.
3- if you need the plastic cover shop it at amazon and tool guys before delta,
4- even it you don't have the 50" fence !!!! GET the larger delta base and make or buy the side extension to fit as it is cheap money now or more money later. the HTC is ok but not as good as the one MADE for the saw. Shop the delta base as in #3 above.
5- if you need help and call delta you will probably get the black & pecker/dewalt service folks and you must request the # for the delta unisaw tech support. If you get there play it by ear and ask if they are b&d or old delta folk. The new b&d folks are as dumb as a box of rocks but it's not their fault be nice and patient till you get someone who knows or till they call you back. be prepared as these guys know every part and bolt that fits regardless of year or the parts list.
good luck,Paddy
Paddy, thanks for the input. I was leaning towards getting the larger base and you just pushed me over the edge.
