I recently purchased a used Unisaw with 5 hp 3 phase motor and want to convert to single phase. Leeson makes a 3 hp single phase replacement motor that I have already purchased.
Besides the motor, do any other components need to be changed? My assumption is that I could connect the supply and replacement motor using the existing components but leave off the third leg of the 3 phase.
Any advice would be appreciated.

It's more complicated than that. New heaters for the overload and new magnetic coil and some rewiring of the switch, meaning a jumper cable. If you don't know how to do it, bring it to your local motor repair shop.
Personally I'd have put a VFD on it and kept the old motor. The VFD by passes the switch issue as it becomes the switch.

A static converter would have given you 2/3's the hp so it would have been equivalent to what you did for a lot less money.
Unfortunately there's no laymans guide to phase conversion with all the answers in one easy access spot. There's more bad and confusing info out there considering the questions I see on the subject.
Rick, thanks for the feedback. I have seen all of the conflicting opinions out there.

Does it have the LVC electricals? If so it's and easy rewire. I may be interested in purchasing the 3 phase motor.

DJK, except for the supply, all of the wiring looks to be intact. What is LVC?
The saw came out of the local community college and was not running when purchased. I was going to keep the 3 phase motor.
Steve
LVC= Low Voltage Control. A metal box on the back of the saw containing the coil, contacts and overloads. If it's a Delta LVC, it is easy to change to single phase operation but new heaters are probably needed. About $8 each.

DJK, OK. I pulled the cover off of the box and all seems to be in place except for the power supply. It looks like whomever removed the saw just disconnected the power supply wires from the terminal block.
DJK, are you still interested in the 3 phase motor?

Baldor or Marathon? How much do you want? UPS shipping from.....? Is the LVC included? Thanks, DJK
DJK, let me check the brand. I have not thought of a price - let me research. Shipping from north Texas 75075. The LVC would be included.
Steve
DJK, the Delta name plate lists the motor as a Baldor in the fine print. I could not find any sales history on used 5HP 3PH Unisaw motor but $300 for all seems fair.
Steve Pippins
Sorry, but for $300 I'm not interested.
DJK
DJK, so what do you thinks is a fair price?

I prefer Marathon motors for the Unisaw. I have a few 3HP, single phase Baldor Unisaw motors I would have traded even up, but you already have the Leeson.DJK
DJK, OK. Thanks for all the help.
