I am a novice woodworker. Mainly working on small projects for my wife to save money as she has expensive taste. (Good thing is I get new tools with new projects) We are currently in the market for a TV console table for our living room. The ones at the funiture stores are less than ideal. She found one that she absoultley loves but it is close to 2000. (like I said expensive taste) It doesn’t look that dificult to build. The problem is the top and bottom. I need to make a board that is 15 in wide x 1-2in thick x 60 in long for the top and bottom. Would a peice of plywood be better for this application or edge gluing two boards. The only problem is I have loss my access to a jointer with our recent move to Maine.
If I go with the edge gluing is it better to put biscuts inbetween the two boards?

Plywood with wood edging would work fine. If you do go with edge gluing boards together, biscuit joining is unnecessary because the wood glue you use will be stronger than the wood itself on edge grain.
Thanks for the help!!! Now I need to go visit the store and buy some wood. Any advice on woods that take up stain well. Most of our funiture is walnut in color. I was figuring I would use walnut but have been unable to locate walnut plywood. That was why I was thinking about edge gluing for the top and bottom.
Depending on how you build your console, plywood may be the better route due to wood stability and overall price. But that's hard to say considering I'm not sure what design you're going after. You may not need a full sheet of plywood for your console and it may be a waste versus buying just hardwood and edge gluing the pieces. To search for walnut plywood in your area go to http://www.woodfinder.com and search for "walnut" and see what you come up with. More likely than not, the hardwood dealer probably carries hardwood plywood. If your heart is not set on walnut, you could use cherry as it will darken over time to a real nice tone.
I made a TV console a few months back using some cherry plywood for the top and edging it with cherry hardwood. Turned out pretty nice.
######I just got a new computer so I apologize as my picture is too big. Try opening it up in a new window so it won't be so large.#######
