Peter,
Garrett Hack recommends a mixture of BLO/Bees Wax/Gum Turps for cleaning and refinishing tool handles, it sounds simple and would like to give it a go.
The Gum Turpentine is proving hard to buy here in New Zealand, would mineral turps do the same job or is there too greater difference between the two products.

John,
Turpentine does clean very well but you can use mineral spirits (paint thinner) to accomplish the same thing.
It will also dry faster and not have such a strong odor.
I'd love to see your country as well as Australia someday.

Thanks Peter
the original recipe is actually mixed together in a double boiler, will the mineral spirits work/be safe in this application?
Yes both great countries, Brent Beach just completed a cycle tour through NZ, said he realy enjoyed it.
Thanks
John
John,
Personally, if I were to heat this mixture, I'd put it in a container or bottle with a tight fitting lid and then let it sit in a very hot water bath for a time. I'm not fond of flammables around any type of open flame. Just shake it from time to time to help incorporate the ingredients.
Be careful if you open it while still warm as pressure will build up inside.
You could also just put it in the sun for warmth. It may take a little longer but the mineral spirits will melt the wax . You can also help it by shaving the wax into pieces.
Good luck.
Peter
