I now have 1 Madrona bowl setting on the shelf slathered in paste wax drying slowly & another of unknown wood started. Last night I laminated 3 pieces of scrap purple heart together. Tonight I turned them into a mallet head & then turned & added a maple handle. Now I am going out & look up at the shelf of different types of wood maple, cherry, madrona, oak, alder, birch, walnut. There isn’t a whole lot of any of these woods but they are all starting to look round now that I have a lathe set up in the shop where I can use it anytime I want to. I just spent $100 on some more turning tools last Friday. Is there any cure for this round sickness??? Or do I just keep on getting Aroundtoit???????

Bart,
You obviously have a very bad case of "Turner's Tic" (Spasmus Rotatus) which is characterised by an obsessive desire to create large piles of spiral shavings and the only reliable cure for this is Aversion Therapy.
This will involve using the lathe for a minimum of 4 hours per day, every day, until all desire has vanished.
Typically, the cure takes 35 to 40 years.
Bart ....
I'm currently undergoing therapy for the same affliction. The prognosis is, as I understand, that with sufficient time and attention to detail, one develops acute xray vision that will aid in determining to a greater or lesser degree of accuracy what lies within the rough chunk of wood you're mounting on the lathe which in turn makes it somewhat easier to know exactly how to 'unwrap' it to best advantage. I think that day comes after perhaps 20-30 years of our current approach.
Happy turning ..... and don't hesitate to try really wierd stuff. I brought home a small cactus stump from my parent's yard that looks like it might be fun to experiment with.
