I’ve seen a few very beautiful pieces turned from pine cones. does anyone know what kind is best, and how to prepare one for turning?

See the March News letter for pics. Basically it's pine cones in epoxy.
Could someone explain the assembly for this project?

Judging from the pics I've seen the pine cones are cast in epoxy resin then turned. You need to do research on casting epoxy.

You put the pinecones in a plastic dish and fill it with epoxy. Spray mold release to reuse the mold. Basically it's a bit of the sculpture process that is used initially. Pretty simple. Ed Moulthrop used a similar technique in his branch bowls. See the bottom left photo
