Hi Folks,
I’d like comments/suggestions as to the application of Tru-Oil as a candidate for a furniture finish. I understand that it’s primarily used as a finish for gunstocks but am curious as to its application to furniture.
From past experience applying it to gunstocks, padding it on, it seems to require MANY, and I emphasize MANY thin coats to achieve a final finish. I’m curremtly on coat #22 on a gunstock, but the finish is absolutely beautiful and the grain is jumping not just popping out!
Very much in the wood and vey little build up. Thoughts are toward padding shellac on after, must try it out.

First, Tru-Oil is a polymerized linseed oil. Tried & True Varnish Oil is a polymerized linseed oil. They are virtually identical but the T&T is less expensive.
With todays finishes, I see little benefit to using an oil finish. Linseed oil has little water or watervapor resistance and it takes a great amount of work to get to a nice appearence. Then it must be periodically renewed to maintain its appearence.
After all the work of using a polymerized oil, I would see no reason to overcoat it with anything. Shellac is not a good outdoor finish so I would not use it on a gunstock.
