Dale,
There is nothing to lift with T&T. It is basically a boiled linseed oil product.
Give the surface a light scrub with a maroon scotch pad or a fine paper like 320 prior to applying the watco.
You can also apply the watco with some 600 grit wet dry paper and sand the surface with it.
It will give you a very silky smooth surface and fill some of the pores at the same time.
If you do this be sure and wipe the surface dry when you are complete. If it is a large piece, do it in sections.
Come back to it in a half hour and wipe it dry again. Keep checking it periodically after that as the oil will want to weep out of the pores for a while.
Be careful with all those oily rags too. There are any number of ways to deal with them; lay them flat outside to dry, hang them outside to dry or immerse them in water. Spontaneous combustion can really ruin your day.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
Peter
