I am making wood blocks for my one year old nephew. I am using cherry, maple, and apple. what should I use as a finish to keep it natural looking and not harm the little guy?

Use nothing. None of those woods will harm him, and he'll know intuitively for the rest of his life to distinguish cherry from maple just from the smell. I've made blocks with no finish for 8 grandkids already. If they get really dirty, just sand 'em a bit. (The blocks, not the grandkids)

thank you ring, I read that walnut oil would be good. I will try unfinished wood. thanks.Joe
Just one word of caution. Nut oils (walnut, groiundnut, etc) should be avoided if there is any chance of nut allergy.

GOOD ONE!
I agree with nothing. I did some blocks and then painted time in primary colars. they were made out of popular. i wish i would have just dyed them. If i did it again i would do what you did and make them out of different woods.them.
remember even if your child has no allergy to nuts, his friend might.

David,
Took me a minute to understand your first sentence, where you said you agreed with nothing. I thought you were being disagreeable saying you didn't agree with anyone else's advice. Took a couple reads but I finally figured out you meant you agreed with not putting any finish on the blocks.
