Moved to Australia (Noosa, South East Queensland). Can anyone out there tell me the best place to buy tools? Starting a new home shop from scratch.

Go out and buy yourself a copy of Australian Wood Review Issue 45. My mail order copy arrived on Friday so it should be in the newsagents this week (you may have to go down to Sunshine Plaza at Moloolabah - did I spell it right?)
the adds in the magazine and the supplier lists at the end of many of the articles are pretty comprehensive. I live in Sydney and have had good experiences with the Sydney arm of those suppliers that also operate out of Brisbane. Oh, drop in and visit Paul Williams at Caloundra for some of the best plane blades in the world!

Thanks Ian. Wood Review available here in Noosa. Will check it out.

Whilst Mitre10, as Don suggests, may be able to order specialist tools in for you, if hand held power tools are what you need, I suggest you look for a specialist small electric tool dealer on the Sunshine Coast — there should be several. My experience is that once you move away from the Bunnings $18.98 specials, the small guys (including Gasweld) are a better option, in terms of both price and customer service. The good ones will help you choose the tool best suited to your needs and price assessories at a reasonable rate. For example, my local guy – in Sydney so not much use to you – is happy to split a 50 pack of jig saw blades without charging a premium to do so.

Ian's advice is good, & it's a good magazine too.
Choice of tools is pretty subjective as I look back from when I started out to where I now tend to buy.
If you have the time hand tools are usually best bought at garage sales where bargains are often lerking amongst junk. Ebay can also be a good source.
For power tools try Gasweld, Alltools/Totaltools, or Mitre 10 stores (M10 may have to order more specialised stuff). For smaller new machinery there is Hafco, Carbatec, Gregory & for the bigger stuff we have Felder, Homag, Gabbett, among others. All I believe have branches in Brisbane. Second-hand machinery dealers are also an option as is the Trading Post which is on-line at http://www.trading-post.com.au

Brisbane is worth the drive. there is a Carbatec store there (not sure where) but there is also the technical bookshop in the city. They have a great selection I always take time to review when I get to queensland.
Aside from tools, Noosa has good access to that noxious weed camphor laurel. I have also pinched a really attractive red colourd eucalypt from the mother in laws' firewood. It was a sawmill offcut so is clearly local (Turned into a beautiful maul).
Eumundi Markets (very trendystuff if you like people in cheescloth) have several regular wood workers, including a permanent furniture place abouve the pub specialising in that big slab stuff. Might be worth a talk to them.
I will be up in a couple of weeks on the bi-annual pilgramage, hope the weather holds- it is a much better beach than the gold coast.
