Howdy,
I have a stack of wood that has been indoors and stickered for several years now. If I move it for a few months does it make sense to resticker the pile in it’s temporary home? Or, will no harm come to it from just piling it up on the storage rack.

John, after two years, it should be plenty dry enough to store without stickers. If the new temporary location experiences humidity levels that are substantially different than those in the shop, you may want to let the wood acclimate awhile once you bring it back in...but you should be well beyond the risk of it developing stains due to mold. Fungi go dormant once the wood's moisture content drops below about 20%MC...So, the task now is just keeping it moderately dry and letting it acclimate if and when you alter its environment.
Jon,
Thanks for the advice. It will save me a bunch of time!

I was watching this thread with interest. Isn't it nice to know that you can stop babysitting the darn stuff at some point!?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Dear FG,
Your comments can be delightful.

Can I respectfully disagree with Jon? I think that stickering at all times is a good thing, well worth the trouble. I find that if I don't sticker, the top board will warp, no matter how dry, just from changes in the humidity in my shop (a basement shop, to be sure). If I sticker, even with 1/4" scraps, I have no problem.

S4S, were're not in disagreement. I nomally leave my stock stickered until I use it...But then I don't have to relocate my inventories. The question here was: Can you get away with relocating and solid stacking lumber that has been air drying for 2 years? The answer is yes...provided you remember to reacclimate it to shop conditions prior to using it.
I follow a very simple axiom in air drying wood: It'll never get too dry. If you have the space, leaving it on stickers until the time of use is always the best policy...if for no other reason, it avoids the labor of restacking it.
