Hello! Lie-Nielsen has a In_TG thiicknessing gauge, it is not in the 2007 catalog, but it can be seen ON-LiNE, this unit will cost me close to a $100.00
Steve Latta made one to make the Federal Card Table, if I am correct it was shown in issue 180 of Dec. 2005 of Fine Woodworking. I am wondering if anyone out in sawdust land knows how to make one.
I am retired and I am not about to spend $100.00 if I cam make it myself. If you could draw it out I would be thankful.
Thanks Jack

Go buy the cheapest marking guage you can find and attach a #10 exacto blade to the end at about aq 60* angle. This cuts thin strips.
If you're looking at the thicknesser, look at the picture. Take a hardwood block and put a kerf in it. The blade is a piece of scraper (bandsaw blade will do) sharpened at about 60* to the face and with a slight relief at the top to allow you to start a piece of stringing in the slot.Only take off a sew thousandths at a time or the strings will break.

If you don't have an appropriate piece of metal for the blade, you can get one from Lee Valley for less than $2.00:

At the "working wood in the 18th Century" conference in Williamsburg this year (sponsored by FWW) they thicknessed hand-sawn stringing with this tool.
The scraper is just a card scraper without a burr.
They clamped one end to a board and ran this down across it several times.
Worked like a champ and looked good too!
