What can you tell me about the book called The Violin Maker: Finding a Centuries-Old Tradition in a Brooklyn Workshop by John Marchese
The book is about Sam Zygmuntowicz and his process to make world class violins specifically the master piece for violinist Eugene Drucker.
Have you read this book ? I know this sounds childish but are there allot of pictures ? From looking at the front pages of the book on line there appears to be no credit to a photographer so I am assuming there are no photos. Is this true ?
I heard about the violin maker in this podcast
http://www.wpr.org/book/090809a.cfm
which just might be the best radio interview I have ever heard; for me and what I am needing at this point in my life. I know that doesn’t make any sense but I recommend the podcast. Can you recommend this book ?

Roc,
I picked up a copy of that book, in a second hand store, while on holiday in the Czech Republic and I loved it.
It was simple, written from a lay mans (in terms of woodwork) point of view, had very few pics but it was very engrossing.
I’d highly recommend it.

Thanks for info guys.Gentilo,Man ! I feel honored. By your profile I see you have been a member for like for ever and this is your first post. Thanks for coming forward !I am in awe of your restraint. I probably would have been smarter if I had kept my mouth shut too. Self respect and modesty are but hollow words to me now.: )And Eoin. Ireland eh ? Very cool ! The one and only chance I got to tour Ireland I was working in a bicycle shop back in the day. One of my very regular customers. God what an interesting, beautiful, artistic woman ! Well she was going to bicycle tour in your lovely country. She was going alone. I said " Going alone ! " Why ?" She said (tired of making quotes sorry ) I have found no one willing to go with me. I raised my hand in great expectation. She looked at me as thought I had offered to skin her house cat so she could have the pelt to remember it by.Oh well. Like I said self respect and modesty are but hollow words to me now.She toured near winter time. We got post cards to the bike shop saying things like : Having a great time ! Testing the limits of Gortex clothing.Still wish I had gone on the trip.rocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Abraham Lincoln ( 54° shaves )
I read the book a year and a half ago and would recommend it as well. More as an inspirational book than a how-to. If you are at all interested in making musical instruments it will provide a wealth of background information you are sure to find meaningful. For other types of woodworkers it is still a fun read.
Can you recommend this book ?
I have no idea.. I have many books I have bought over many years. Some I have read just once and many other books many times!
Just buy the book OR go the your local library and ask for it!
Libraries loan to each other so you may have a limited time in your possession!
