The new Wood magazine just published a glue test focusing on PVAs, interior and exterior and polyurethanes. They also did some testing on other types of glue, but didn’t do the detail on them (to my frustration). They stress tested edge to end grain and edge to edge glue joints, open time, clamping time, temperature resistance, and water resistance.
The loctite wood glues (PVAs) were outstanding, if anyone sold them within 100 miles, I’d buy them. The Elmer’s PVAs stood out also, way beyond titebond.
Gorilla glue was the best urethane, but the elmers was good also.
And, they didn’t side by side test the epoxys, hide glues, and PUR type hot melts against the PVAs and urethanes, but they did test crystal hide glue against titebond premixed hide glue and found the titebond to be immensely superior.
Anyone else read this review? What do you think? I still find glue choice to be as important and tough as finish.

There is some discussion in a following thread titled "Polyurethane glues vs Titebond".
I would be careful about using the statement "best glue". Virtually all the adhesives tested provided a joint stronger than the wood itself. Some were better in certain applications and the article ended up making three recommendations based on the application.
Rather than trying to summarize the article, I would recommend that those who are interested purchase the current issue. Reading the complete article will provide lots of excellent info about adhesives as well as stamping out some myths about old time hide glue.
One thing that comes out of the test results is that current adhesives are far superior to "old time" adhesives for pure strength.
