Here’s the deal: I made a hall table for a friend last week. He liked one I had in my house, but wanted one in SYP (southern yellow pine) because his house is an lod victorian and the floors and interior trim are all this beautiful deep amber colored SYP.
Go figure that this would be the first thing I’ve ever made out of pine, and I’m stumped on how to match up to the rest of his house. It doesn’t really have to match exactly, just so it doesn’t clash too horribly.
It only took me 7 hours to make the table, not counting clamping time… I’ll have him do most of the finishing (with supervision) since it was a favor anyway.
Thanks for your ideas,
Kevin

I would use orange(amber) shellac. If brushing use a 1 1/2 lb cut. Apply as many coats as needed to get the right color.Probably will take 4 coats.
Kevin, I think I got this out of FWW a couple of years ago, to help pine look a bit more "aged":
Before using the orange shellac, first brew some very, very strong black tea. Yes, tea, no cream or sugar. Make it very strong; for example, if you'd use one teabag per cup, use 4 or 5. Let it cool. Brush it on your piece as you would any water-based stain. (It won't darken the wood incredibly, like stain, but it will help.)
After the wood dries, sand (lightly) the raised grain. Repeat this two or three times, then go ahead with applying the orange shellac.
Although I don't usually work with pine, either, I have used this on a couple of pieces (a chest and a small bench) and have liked the effect. It cuts the orange/yellow color of shellac on pine, just a bit.
Of course, try this on a test piece, first!

Look, I made a hat -- Where there never was a hat!
Kevin,
Recently I tried to match some old pine in the family room. I took about 10 pieces of scrap wood and made up a batch of stain from the water based dyes...kept tryng ...and put a finish on too before I decided which to go with. It worked very well.
Might be the wrong time of year for it, but sunshiune works pretty well. Or a UV lamp if you've got one.
