As a native of Southeastern Ohio, Im not used to the hacked up cherry around Knoxville TN. Not sure why everyone seems to think that cherry should only be 4 inches wide! If anyone in the area has a good source for the wide stuff, I would be greatly appreciative…
Thanks.

You could use woodfinder.com or woodweb.com.
How Wide do you want?
Do you want flat sawn, quarter sawn, rift sawn, curly, or birds eye. ?
How thick.
Are you willing to pick it up or do want it to be able to ship. If you want curly I have a supplier that I have been buying some pretty stuff from here in IL (just across the river from St. Louis). He does not have a web site and you would have to travel as he would not ship that far (unless you want a lot). Good luck.
Here are a couple of links that come to mind but there are many more out there.

If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Bones:I am a frequent visitor in Alton, IL, just across the river from St. Louis. Is the supplier you mentioned near there?Joe
He's just outside of Edwardsville which is real close. Shoot me an e-mail and a phone number and I'll give you a call some time this week end. There are other suppliers in my area, if you are going to visit the area. I live about 20 minutes from Alton in Troy IL.Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Forgot to add a couple of pic's of the last stuff I got.

I'm in TN, but not very close to you (I'm 75 miles southwest of Nashville). I can get cherry, walnut, oak, poplar, sycamore, cedar, etc. pretty much any way I want - the key is to get to know your local sawmills. At least around me, there are 6 commercial mills in a 15 mile radius and once you go in and get to know the guys there they will generally let me know when something "special" comes in. Most of them are cutting and milling lumber for pallet operations, so they set aside any particularly nice looking logs for me. Although website searches can be useful, in very rural areas most of the sawmills are "mom and pop" operations that do not advertise, so it may take a little legwork on your part to find them.
I have a pretty nice stack of 8/4 and 12/4 cherry and walnut, 8' to 12' wide sitting under a cover drying right now. The last batch of cherry I got was about 250 bf of 12/4 boards, and I paid $100 for it (rough cut, and not kiln dried).
last batch of cherry i got ( 1000 bd ft. ) furniture grade came from just 2 trees
these 2 trees were 30" dia the sawyer said , however he is 6 hrs round trip from my home but worth it
the boards are from 6" up to 12" & mostly 8' long air dried 2 years
the private mill is located in quebec
there are closer mills to me but they dont seem to get the larger logs to produce the larger boards
the boards are from 6" up to 12"
Why on Earth would your sawyer cut a 30" diameter log into 6-12" wide boards?
dont know dont care and never asked him
my thickness planer only handles up to 13"
i also gather he cut around the log cutting all 4 sides as i also got the centre pieces 6x6 & 4x4 x 8'
Hi Dude,
Could you give me the address of the cherry source in Quebec? I live in central Vermont and would like to find a less expensive source of wide boards. I pay $5.85 per board for mediocre to good material which seems to be a little steep from what I've seen on posts. Many thanks.
Jim from snow country
his name is Ed Bisson & he does custom sawing mostly from his own acreage
he ias located about 35 miles N E of Ottawa east of wakefield quebec at Lac ST- Antoine , 466 Colonie Rd 819- 457-2251
he has other species of wood as well such as birch , hard maple , red oak etc
as a rule he tends to like to deal in lifts of 500 bd ft air dried
i have bought several 1000 bd ft from him with no trouble
all the 1" rough (7/8) actual has cleaned up perfectually with no scrap
one little quirk is he wants to deal in cash (cdn) right now the same value as a US dlr give or take a cent lately
my no is 613- 774-2005 or e mail http://[email protected] best of luck
Hi Ed,
Many thanks for the info on the source for material. Do you have any idea what he currently charges for rough cherry? Is it air or kiln dried? I have a friend who is from Ottawa (with family there). We could hook up for a ride north if the price is reasonable with consideration to travel expense. 500 BF lift would be fine. Again, thank you for the reply.
Jim in Woodstock, VT
his name is Ed mine is Ken
all his material is air dried and the price seems to some extent to depend on his current need for cash
last time if i recall correctly cherry was either $ 325 or 350 a bd ft which is pretty much the going rate in this area
the main point was that i have bought from others and his was the best quality for the same money and had no worm holes or gum pockets that some others have & i milled all i bought right away to check the quality as soon as i picked any up
most sawyers it appears buy saw logs for all their supplies in his case he has 100's of acres of standing timber that he owns
Ed cuts and hauls to his mill in the winter he told me
There is also a sawer about 5 miles from me who processes saw logs also another 1/4 mile away is firing up a new mill but naturally they are dependent on their suppliers of saw logs but if you are interested i can supply their #'s
Where about in Quebec is the mill located?
Phil please see my message to imbula prior to this one it contains the info you requested plus i might add the sawyer is bilingual which helps if your a anglo like myself
i hope the info is of use to all wood hackers in the area either side of the 49th
chris,
I'll second others.. you need to get to know a local saw mill. I can get cherry any way I want it in widths up to 22 inches (if he has his big blade on up to 26 inches) whatever thickness, whatever length, (up to 19 feet) FAS Cherry sells for $2.90 a bd.ft. and if you want mill run (the best deal since that includes FAS and all the wood with character that normally gets seperated out) for around $1.00 a bd.ft.
True that's green and rough sawn at the mill but cherry dries easily. I've never, ever, lost a single piece of it. And you will save enough on the price of wood to more than pay for planers and jointers..
