Morning Ernie!,
I have an older (I believe) rockwell Delta lathe 46-525. I saw the post from the fella with the sticking drive center and it prompted this post. My problem is at the other end! My tail center sticks. I ruined the one I had getting it out, so I purchased a new one from woodturning supplies when they were at the wwking show. axminster I believe, anyhow , the same problem exists, when I retract the “quill” (is that the right term?) all the way, it just stays there and is a real bear to get out. to note, I have a drill chuck for the tail stock which just pops out when I retract it nice as you please, in comparing the two tapers , I cant find any difference. Any ideas? Thank you for your time.
Regards
Eric

I suspect your lathe is self ejecting. That is, your retract the quill (correct term) all the way pops the center out. If the center is short (as compared to your drill chuck) then the screw in the center of the quill that pushes the Morse taper out never reaches the center. Try putting a short slug of metal in before inserting the center and see if it ejects better. If so that is the problem.
