I have decided to build a table to fit in my bay window area (it’s a large area). My wife doesn’t want a window seat area like I’ve seen many times. She wants the area to be open under the seat as it wraps around the bay window. So the first question is: I’m planning to build the seat out of 8/4 Hickory and fasten it to the wall studs as well as placing corbels on every wall stud to support it. The corbels will be fairly large in size and also made out of Hickory. The seat will be 26”-42”-26” as it wraps around the window and 18” deep. Do you think this will be enough support for the seat?
The second question is the table will be 80” long on the outside and of course be shaped like the bay window area dimensions above. I figure is will be 40” wide at the widest spot. I would like it to be made out of 8/4 Hickory like the seat. I’ve been told by a woodworker friend that I should make it out of 4/4 so it doesn’t crack down the road. Is 4/4 going to give me more stability than 8/4 for the table top? Thanks – Mark

A table top of hickory that size at 2" thick will weigh about 127# just the top. I would rather see a 5/4" thick top as 2" might look to bulky. (5/4 x 40 x 80)
Thanks for your input.
Actually 8/4 is about 1 3/4" and I was planning to plane it down to around 1 1/2". Thats the common size of a kitchen counter edge and I thought that would be about right.

That is weird. I made the first reply to this question and now it is gone. Was it deleted by the Knots people ? It was a perfectly serious inquiry not a smart elick.
I asked is the table going to get direct sun on the surface or just light through the window. Incase I am being misinterpreted a south window = direct sun, a north window just light.
I returned to say that I just watched Norm/ New Yankee Workshop and he used walnut ply and edged with rather large solid wood. That would be thin and stable. Perhaps could get or make up Hickory plywood.
I like the thick and heavy stuff myself.
