Hello All,
I am planning to build a large conference table (42 in. x 10 ft.) that I will donate to be used in a Boy Scout camp. That means it will see much use and probably some abuse. It will likely be used as a dining table as well as a conference table. My plans are to use 3/4″ MDF as a substrate. I intend to use several different species of exotic engineered flooring material cut, mitered and banded to create the top “show” surface. I also intend to inset or inlay each of the BSA merit badges(embroidered patches) into the table top that are required for a boy to reach the rank of Eagle Scout.
I’m comfortable with the woodworking but I need some suggestions on a finish to use. It will need to withstand the intended purpose but it will also need to build to sufficient thickness to cover the inlaid patches. Also, I wonder if I need to worry about compatability with the factory applied finish on the flooring material? Should I go the safe route and cover it with glass?
Your advice is appreciated.

What you want is an epoxy pour-on finish. Google "epoxy pour on" and you will get the info you want.
Contact the flooring manufacturer about compatibility. I would also be concerned about adhesion of the epoxy to the flooring material. You might want to test the finish on a sample of the flooring to see how the adhesion goes. You may have to scuff sand the flooring finish.

Bill,
I assume that you are considering using flooring because it is an economical choice. Most engineered flooring only has a thin surface of veneer on top (less than 1/4"). I would lean towards a solid wood top reinforced with breadboards or battens to prevent warping. A softwood for the top would be economical while still durable. If the top is made of solid wood, each scout could carve their initials into the table. Just a thought.

If I remember Boy Scout camp...coolaid, mustard, hamburger grease, banging knives and forks, dropped rucksacks and many little things that go scratchy... go with Howie's recommendation. Epoxy. The Adults won't mind and the kids could care less.
