I have heard of a table saw vacuum system that I think uses holes in the rear guide pipe for the table saw fence as a pickup for the sawdust directed rearward by the blade. One end of the pipe is plugged and the other attached to the vacuum system. Have you seen or heard of anything like this that works – either commercial or homebuilt?

I can't recall anything like you desribe. One or more companies make aftermarket blade guards that add dust collection to the guard with a hose that connects to the tubular support that the guard hangs off of, that may be what you are thinking of.
