Just about everything in my 12’x24′ shop is mobile including cabinet saw which I want plant permanently in one spot and shore up this area from underneath the wood floor. What would you say should be the minimum amount of working room distance from the blade in all four directions but mainly behind the blade for feeding stock? I want to confine this work space area to a bare comfortable minimum to help maximize the rest of my shop.
thanks

Yo Harleydog,
I'd say you need at least 8'1" in front of the blade and more if you can spare it. However if you won't cut plywood sheets, then 6' is okay. For the rest, it depends on your extension tables. I don't need much to the left side of the blade, maybe 2' there and 4' to the right, again to cover the size of a sheet of plywood. But that's just it, what's right for me, may not suit you at all. There are no hard and fast rules. It really depends upon what you're cutting. If you do a lot of ripping of long sticks, then have less to the sides and more on your run-off and infeed sides. 8' of clear space to each. Good luck. Gary
Thanks Gary _ my main problem is I don't know what I'll be cutting. It's so new to me having good tools and a shop (allbeit small) at the same time. I want to cut it all- Big and small, round or square, long or short - Know what I mean? I'm busy having fun building shop jig's and such while refining much needed cutting and measuring abilities. If the measure of a good woodworker was 12 inches I'd say I'm at about a 1/2 inch or so- so getting good and safe advice and insight from you guy's at finewoodworking is greatly appreciated. thanks again for the response.
