I was planning on putting a new electrical cord on my table saw(a Powerematic 66). It has been several years since I hooked it up–you had to provide the cord and plug yourself, don’t know if you still do today or not. In the instructions, which are somewhat sketchy, it says to use 12/3 cord for single phase operation. I happen to have some 10/3 on hand—-am I correct in that it is safe to use larger cord than is called for? There is no mention of this in the instructions—nor mention of how far a 12/3 cord is suitable for. I need to go about 12′.

10/3 is fine as long as the terminals in the plug and the box can handle the larger diameter wire, they are probably large enough.

John is right--going to a larger gauge wire is fine as long as you make solid connections.
