Hi, I am living in Stockholm Sweden for the time being but normally I live in Texas. I have finished a few very small projects with mesquite while here and I want to finish them with a french polish. This is the only finish I have found that doesn’t darken the mesquite. I can’t find shellac here but they do have a word “lack” that is translated as varnish. Does anyone know what I should ask for here in Stockholm to actually get clear shellac? I think denatured alcohol will not be a problem–although aquavit has been know to disolve wood! any help is much appreciated. Mathguy

Well, my little pocket Swedish-English dictionary failed miserably! If ADESIGNS is out there, his wife can help, but if you don't get any help today, try printing out a web page with the cans on it. Or, call around to some custom furniture makers. I'd think a big percentage would speak English and someone could help!

How 'bout this? Go to a store that sells paint and varnish and lacquer and such. Find the solvents -- probably they'd be in screw-top cans like in the States. Unscrew the tops and identify the lacquer thinner by smell. Now you've got a can of solvent for lacquer, with labels in Swedish. Either look for some of the same words on the cans of varnish/lacquer/whatever, or ask for help with that can of lacquer thinner in hand.
I sent Rick a note this morning. I'm sure he'll check in after he sees it.
