Sunhill spiral cutter and dispoz-a-blade
This topic has been the subject of some postings in the past, but since many of them are a couple of years old, I’m hoping a new post will bring out additional or updated input. Based on the cost and mixed reviews, I’ve decided not to go with the Byrd Shelix cutter. Instead, I think I’ve got it narrowed to either the dispoz-a-blade or the sunhill spiral. If anyone has experience with these, good or bad, I would be really grateful to hear. I have a Delta DJ-20.

Are you basing the decision on actual experience or views from the web? When you say Sunhill Spiral I assume you mean the flexible HSS type. Personaly I would only make decisions from hands on experiences. I have used the WoodTech planers with the straight carbide knives (versus the angle Shelix). Not bad but I can still get tearout by upping the speed. I've also had no problems with wild grain with straight fresh knives. I would say the big fear for most folks is the fear of changing knives which makes these alterrnatives so popular. Haven't done a lot with the Esta knives but I can buy better grade steel than the esta-knives and can change a 20" four knife head in a leisure 20 minutes but I did it for a living, working on machines, but I can understand the frustration.
I had the dis pos a blade system for my planer. I went to a shelix head. One of the best things I did. I plane lots of curly maple and birch, also hard maple. The disposablades were good but didn't last long on hard maple. I have used the shelix head for almost a year and have not turned the cutters yet. Just my experiance. Good luck with whatever you do.
