I have just finished making a grandmother clock. It is made of walnut.
any suggestions for a finish. I was going to put two coats of shellac thined out sanding lite between each coat.
two coats of stain also lite sanding between coats. Then two coats of oil base varnish. Does this sound alright.

Raydogstauber,
Stain probably won't work over two coats of shellac; instead it will act as a glaze, which can be a good thing.
Varnish is difficult to rubout properly on anything but flat surfaces, so I would use shellac.
The following link has some information on finishing walnut.

Orange shellac
Bob Flexner, a finishing guru, suggests orange shellac on walnut. I did just that recently with a protective coat of Minwax wiping varnish on top. It looks great.
