Substrate curling when hammer veneering
I am a novice at hammer veneering. I am attempting to apply veneer to one side of 1/4″ thick wood for tops of Shaker boxes, the largest being 5-1/2″ x 8-1/4″. I know my substrate should be quarter sawn but I did not have any. When the veneer dries the piece curls with the veneer on the concave side. I gather hide glue shrinks when it dries. Will it be enough to size the other side to prevent curling or is there a better way?
Thanks, John.

At that thickness you will have to veneer both sides. Sizing alone will not prevent the warping. I sometime veneer only one side of things, but only when they are quite narrow and or thick and restrained in some way (table aprons, drawer fronts etc.)

Thanks, Rob. The sizing was not enough. I have veneered the other side and all is well.
Merry Christmas, John.
