Why have all of the major power tool manufacturers totally (or nearly totally) abandoned the production of quality miter saws (non-compund, non-sliding)?
I understand that the manufacturers have to produce saws that will sell to target markets, but this seems to have been a niche in the market that is totally ignored – Makita has a 12 inch saw, and Hitachi has a 15 inch saw – both go for better than $600.00!

I'd say it was market driven. I'm assuming you think a simple mitersaw shouldn't be priced so high. The more of an item that's made and sold typically is cheaper in price. Any reason you can't just buy a coumpound saw and use it like a standard mitersaw? Apparently they don't sell nearly enough of the simple mitersaws to lower the prices accordingly. I'm sure they are trageting the dominant demand for mitersaws accordingly.
You might look at Omga...high end simple miter saws starting at over $1,000. Now doesn't that make the other saws look like a bargain.
I personally currently have a Makita LS1221 Compound - I came back to the US after almost 13 years in Germany, and was surprised to no longer be able to find a good-quality 'straight' miter saw that didn't cost an arm (or other appendage) (is OMGA associated with Rolls Royce?).
Whereas I get pretty accurate results with the Makita, I feel that I do have to adjust it more to achieve that accuracy...
It is set up with the Beisemeyer 3 ft fence system (with modified stop), and a CMT chop/miter blade (good blade, by the way).
