Hi,
I’m constructing a mahogany storm door 1 3/4″ thick, the insect screen will be on the outside of the tempered glass windows and the muntins are on the outside of the screen. I’d rather not have to store glass panels etc so I’d like to construct it so the top glass panel is fixed and the bottom panel can slide up and down to regulate airflow during sumer, using some type of brass hardware to keep the window held up at the desired level. The glass panels will be mounted within a removable wooden frame so the whole thing can be removed when the insect screen requires replacing. The screen will be installed in a traditional way but it will be placed before the glass section goes in. That leaves about 1″ for the glass panel section to fit into. The door you see in the above link is pretty much the finalized design.
Has anyone got some solid ideas on how to construct the section to house the glass panels so that one of the panels can easily slide up and down.
Thanks for the input,
Wayne

Wayne,
For my money, you'd be best off making removable screen and storm panels. I know you said you don't want to store them. But leaving the storms in the door during the summer makes for a very heavy door, and you'll likely tire of looking through the screen during the winter months when it's not needed to keep out bugs.
For the sliding glass panels, have you looked into taking apart and incorporating an aluminum or vinyl triple track storm window into the design? That would save a lot of fabricating a special, one-off track system. And the minimal aluminum of the frame around the glass can be painted any color. Be sure to use tempered glass for the glass though. That's an item required by building code..

Zolton,I really do need the ability to open and close the windows in summer due to environmental and aspect considerations. The screen in winter doesn't bother me, we currently have a nosy old metal door in this same configuration and it works well but we dont want metal this time.I'll certainly continue trying to find some type of premade system like you mention but up until now haven't had much luck. We definately plan to use tempered glass. Thanks,Wayne
