Well, Steel City must be on a mission to join Lee Valley as having the best customer service around. They didn’t bat an eye when I called them about this problem: I bought a “used” benchtop mortiser (off Craig’s list). I put it in quotes “used” because all the guy did was a couple test cuts and never used it again. Obvious from looking at it, pristine. Problem???? The motor didn’t start right up, but had a little lull before reaching full speed.
I’m selling the mortiser to a friend in California, but wanted to make things right before sending it to him. Called SC and explained the situation. They are sending a new motor direct to California and I’m shipping the mortiser sans motor down there. No big demand for documentation, no passing me off to one decision-maker or another, just getting it done!
BRAVO!!

I second Paul's remark.
WOW.

That's impressive. I own two Steel City tools, and have been very pleased with the support and CS. It's a JOY when folks stand behind their products.
Two weeks ago, my 2003 Honda Accord shredded its transmission. My dealer called Honda, and I got a rebuilt tranny for FREE! Nearly five years old, out of warranty, 68,000 miles and a new tranny plus they paid for my towing. It's a JOY when folks stand behind their products. Maybe Steel City and Honda could team together and make fuel efficient woodworking truck! Tom
"...fuel efficient woodworking truck! " Now there's a concept!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Afternoon Jamie...

Jamie,
Just curious...why did you decide to sell the SC mortiser? For the moment, a mortiser is on my list of things to buy over the next year or so. If I had to roll the dice right now, it would be a tossup between the General and the SC unit.
Hi, Ron. I already own a Steel City mortiser, bought it back in August with some "play money" I had. This one of which we speak, with the motor problem, was one I picked up on Craig's List because I knew I could make a few sheckels reselling it (the guy had it buried in a whole bunch of other stuff, and under-priced). Then it turned out my friend in California was eager to get one, so I sold him this extra one I had. Cool.
Which General are you looking at?? At the time I bought the SC, there was nothing else that could come close to it in that price range (with the current $40 rebate, it runs $239 retail).forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Jamie,I'm reacting primarily to the reviews I've read. The General has been reviewed several times and always ranks highly. The SC hasn't been around that long, and less information is available. That said, I've yet to hear any unfavorable comments about the SC. Who knows...I've got time to make up my mind! Thanks for the prompt reply.
I understand the quandry. Of course, when I bought my Steel City mortiser over a year ago, there were even fewer owners out there, LOL. I went to Summner Woodworks specifically to buy the General tilting-head mortiser for what? four-hundred-and-something dollars. They had a row of mortisers there, including the usual suspects (Shop Fox, Powermatic, Delta, 2 levels of Generals, and the Steel City. Looking at the big table of the SC, plus the extendable stock supports and the roller hold-in mechanism, I started wavering on the decision about the tilting General. Took me 1/2 hour to make up my mind, went home with the Steel City. Poor guy who was helping me, LOL!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I have the general in question, the SC was not available when I got the General. The general seams nice but the SC (now that I have sean it) seams a better deal, and it SC is this good on service it is an even better deal.
Doug
You should give them the word that you told all of these readers on Knots and their good service will be in the equation when we make decisions. Nice to read a positive customer response.
