Just got the Toolseeker.com newsleter for January. Woodworker.com has the Steel City 3HP, 50″ fence, titanium-coated cabinet saw (left– or right-tilt) on sale for $1200, free shipping. Has anyone dealt with WWer.com??? Comments??? This sale is very tempting…..

FG,
Woodworker.com is Woodworker's Supply. I buy most of my cabinet supplies from them, as they give a "pro" discount on just about everything. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them as they are a good vendor. I believe they have 3 warehouses across the US - New Mexico, Wyoming, and North Carolina- your stuff would probably ship from Wyoming.
Let us know how it works out.

I've bought stuff from them over the years, most recently a Steel City air cleaner. No problems or surprises. They've been in business for a long time. Their web site was apparently set up by a nerd who has no concept of user-friendly design, though.
Note that the saw on sale for that price is a right-tilt, which may be a Good Thing or a Bad Thing, depending on your preference.

Steve, either left- or right-tilt, as mentioned in my post. I simply linked the R-tilt as it was the first one I hit when cruising.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
That appears to be a typo at the Toolseeker site. Although it says $1249 on the table saw search results page, if you click on the link for "Steel City 35640," the price that comes up is $1949.
-Steve
Actually at the dealers web site it shows a price of $1,149.00 .... for the right tilt only though (left tilt is $500 to $600 additional). Check this link at the Wyoming store:
http://www.woodworker.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=035-623
"...for the right tilt only..."
That's what I said!!!

OK, I checked it out. ...... Look at this page. The RT saw is $1199.99 and the LT saw is $1149.99. The 2nd and 4th in the listing. These are coming directly from Steel City as opposed to being delivered by the vendor. Must be clearing out some inventory, maybe to make room for the new saws that I've heard are coming in February.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
The second and fourth in the listing are both right-tilt. Look at the model numbers and compare to the info at the Steel City web site: The first two items have the same number (35630); I don't know what the difference is (maybe the fence?). They're both right-tilt. The third item (35640) is the left-tilt saw, at $1949. The fourth item (35700) isn't listed on the Steel City web site, but other information, both at woodworker.com and elsewhere, suggests that it is the same basic saw with a 30" rather than 50" fence, and it is a right-tilt one.

Jeez, Steve, I'm gonna have to start buying stronger coffee or something, 'cause I obviously didn't read the descriptions super-carefully. OK, for now......they have changed the description since this morning -- they were doing web maintenance when I first tried to hit that web page tonight. This morning, under description, where the blue type is, it was indicated that the item would come direct from the manufacturer. It's worded differently now. However, you will notice that the Catalog Number for those two items (the 2nd and 4th ones) ends in a V, which I suspect designates vendor.
The difference between the two saws that are listed under $1200 is the fence, as you suspected. It looks like the Toolseeker.com email was incorrect, bet it's causing confusion, as it did here.
I wouldn't mind a RT saw, I've been living with one for several years, and as long as there's a miter slot on both sides of the blade, I don't think I care. Still pondering whether I can allow myself to go for this, when not all the $$'s in the bank yet.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
...as long as there's a miter slot on both sides of the blade, I don't think I care...
FG, I think I've mentioned my Jet SS which I sold and bought my Griz 1023. That POS Jet SS had miter slots on both sides of the blade...BUT THEY WEREN'T THE STANDARD DISTANCE FROM THE BLADE!!! Why...Jet did this...is beyond me!
At the time (2 years ago) I couldn't get a tenoning jig (which I had bought already) that would work on this saw. Becuse of the slot spacing, the jig couldn't get close enough to the blade to be of use. Dumbest thing I've ever seen. I ended up selling the tenoning jig at a loss, and making a homemade jig that rode on the fence. That was OK, but limited in use, and not really what I wanted. Now that I have the 1023, I need to buy another tenoning jig. What a pain.
Jet now makes a special tenoning jig for their Super Saw, at a special price of course.
So...be careful what you wish for.
That SC deal sounded too good to be true, I would've been all over that if I was in the market for a saw. Seems now like it was...too bad.

"So...be careful what you wish for." OK, Jeff, let me see if I truly understand your conclusion: Because you bought one (1) 2-slot saw, and there was a defect, then all two-slot table tops must be defective? Oooooooo, I don't think so! Even my cheap old Jet contractor saw has two parallel slots. If I were to receive a saw that didn't I could be on the horn to the company, getting them to send me a new top.
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
No..you don't understand my response. I didn't say anywhere that the saw was defective. It was NOT defective. I said the design had been changed and the miter slot locations were not milled in the standard locations. My point was...make sure the slots are located with the standard distances to the saw blade...otherwise...factory made feather boards, tenoning jigs, etc that are built for that standard spacing, will not work for your saw.I'm sorry if my previous post was confusing to you.Jeff
"I'm sorry if my previous post was confusing to you." Nope, I'm the one who's being dense. Really not concentrating or reading very well the last couple of days (or daze, as the case may be). I re-read your post, see what you mean. I've been busy and stressed, sorry!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Are you going to sell your current saw too? ...that'd provide a bit more cash on hand. With cost of fuel and materials going up seemingly endlessly, I think I'd hop on that SC deal, so long as it doesn't take food off the table....
WOW, that link indicated free freight! You had better jump at that! If my 1023 was not up to snuff, I'd jump at that!Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Great deal on the Titanium even though Steve noted it is right tilt. I really prefer left tilt.. but I would personally give the right consideration at that price. I strickly rip with my table saw, so the blade sits at 90 degrees all the time anyway and left-right is not a problem for me.
BTW.. we poured water on the Titanium table early one morning at the last Atlanta WW Show. Wiped it off late afternoon and no rust what-so-ever. I'm not saying that it should be left out in hurricanes, but if I drop any water or get a drop of sweat on my cast iron machines, I get rust within 30 minutes here in Atlanta.
Good luck with your decision....

OOPs.. just notice you posted right or left.. disregard above concerning that...

Sarge, do you have any thoughts on why they have this saw reduced so much right now? Is there another saw on the horizon they're making room for?
BTW: It does look like it's only the right-tilt that's maked down so far.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Yes ma'am, I think I do know. The right tilt in the non Titanium table (the basic same TS without the "T" table was drastically reduced down several months ago. Right tilts don't sell as left tilts these days. So....
For the same reason any retailer has "blow-out" sales after Xmas.. to clear what didn't move and to bring in the current crop of goodies. Having right tilts on hand that are not selling is a tie-down on cash flow. So.. "stack em high and sell em low". And that is not to say that a right tilt is not a good thing... simply to say that a right tilt doesn't sell as well as a left tilt and a lesson has been learned by the new guys on the block.
I can pretty much say this is very close to the truth as you're going to get. I just so happened to speak to Scott Box from Steel City this morning and it was mentioned in that conversation. Is there something new in the works other than that. If there is he did not mention it and he probably would have. Personally, I don't think so as not much can be improved on the saw other than a riving knife.
The black granite fence models are ready with the 8" jointer (hence the sale they are having at Woodcraft for $999) and the BS table as well. The new TS with granite tops are currently slated for March and all is on schedule at the moment.
Pretty much it for the moment.. but if you have more specific questions let me know. I will see Scott and the guys not this week-end but Fri-Sat.-Sun of the next or Jan. 25-26-27 at the Atlanta WW Show in the Redmond and Machinery booth. I would be happy to ask at that time.
Regards...
Sarge..
"...but if you have more specific questions let me know...." Yowza. First, though, these saws are being shipped directly from Steel City, even though they're being sold by WWer.com, so it's SC that's clearing out space. I'm not sure I could get used to a left-tilt saw, LOL!
The main thing I want to know is how easy/hard it is to remove, and then replace accurately, the splitter/blade guard assembly. I'd call Sumner WW and ask the guys there, but based on my experience that last time I stopped in, I seem to know more about that kind of stuff than they do! I'm close to dropping the hammer on this saw (so to speak), but I don't want it if they haven't made some improvement that enables easy removal/replacement of that splitter.
Thanks Sarge!!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
A good question and frankly, I can't remember the details of how it's attached. I am sure the guys could inform you if you ask specifically. And you may be right about you may know more than they, unfortunately in many cases.
But.. I will also have a look next week and see if a mod can be made easily as I did to my Uni-saw bolts that my splitter attaches too. I can remove the "crown guard" or the entire splitter under 30 seconds. Definitely not PM 2000 or one of the Euro's that were designed with a quick release, but for the price I paid for it the few extra seconds is a secondary thing for me as about the only thing I take if off for is to use my home-made tenon jig.
Sometimes I get the feeling that everything I have is home-made and I just don't understand why I feel that way? Perhaps it may have to do with that "cheap vs frugal" discussion we had once upon a time... just perhaps...! ha.. ha... ha..ha..ha..
