Hi all,
I am considering purchasing my first bandsaw, the SC 14″ granite top model #50100G. From what I can tell it looks like a solid piece of equipment. I was hoping to get any feedback on this particular saw, both the good and the bad.
Thanks in advance,
Shawn

Below is a link for Sarge's original comparison/review of the Steel City band saw. I'm sure he'll see your thread and chime in with current info and opinion....

Thanks,
I have read his reviews before and found them imformative. I was kinda hoping to get more reviews from people who have also used them for a while and could could mention the good with the bad. I went ahead and ordered it on Saturday nonetheless.

He bought one [maybe? maybe the 18" per dgreen below], so I was hoping he'd chime in here. Must be off playing at the beach or something, LOL! During the dog days of summer, it can take longer than usual to get feedback from people -- they're either slaving outside, or off vacationing, rather than focusing on Knots like the should be doing. <grin>

He may have -- I just don't remember. Where is that guy anyway?! I'll drop him an email.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
dgreenSarge did buy the 18". I wish I had room for one that big. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
I believe he has two, one 18" for resaw and a 14" without riser for small blade work. Seem to remember that about cutting dovetails or something. BEACH Time, gotta love that BEACH time! AZMO <!----><!----><!---->

I could be wrong, but I think the smaller saw was a make other than SC.
Sarge has been wheeling and dealing tools so much lately it's hard to keep track!
Crappy beach weather here today, more like build a fire and make a pot of soup! I'm jealous.....

Well there ain't no beaches in Phoenix, but I just got back from Hawaii. I called in sick but that mean a.. boss of mine said get back to work. Its a beach being self employed. If I could a I wooda stayed. BEACH Time ya gotta love it.
I know you are right, his other saw is an older delta? maybe, but he is a wheeling dealin son of gun. Do you suppose he traded his first spouses in for toooools? They got the furniture he got tooled... I know there is a BAD country western song in their sumwheres.

I have the same kind of boss and if I'm lucky I'll get to go to San Diego to see my son this fall.
Which island did you go to? I lived on Oahu from 57 to 65 but haven't been back since 89. When we moved there the only two hotels on Waikiki were the Royal Hawaiian and the Queens Surf. My dad used to take us to Haunama Bay and if there was anybody else there he would grouse about it being too dammned crowded and take us elsewhere.
I would bet Sarge didn't go through more than one practice wife before he found the model he could stick with!

My favorite beech, while stationed a Pearl, was Wiamea Bay(sp) on the north shore. Good surf! till you catch a wave wrong and get pushed to the bottom and get good sand and coral scrub down!Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

Sounds like Steel City makes a good BS, but the current issue of Wood claims Grizzly G0555 to be the top 14" BS . Sadly, SC wasn't included in the testing, but then Griz wasn't in on Sarge's review.
Do you have any idea how Griz and SC compare?
Nope, haven't seen the SC band saw myself. Just looking at specs and warranty info, though, I'd lean toward the Steel City.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

I have the SC 14" bandsaw with the cast iron top--I WISH I had the granite top. I love the saw. I bought the riser block with the saw, and it does great. I'm going to try resawing for the first time in a few weeks. The saw is well made, runs quiet and no vibration. I'm very pleased with the quality and the cuts. I just need more time on the saw to get better at using it! It's too dang hot now to spend much time in the shop. FWIW, I also own the SC benchtop mortiser, and love it as well. Tom
Thanks for all the replies. It was a toss up between the Grizzly G0513 and this granite top SC model. The SC table is a little smaller and has .5 hp less, but I could buy it at woodcraft and not pay the freight charge.
Beach time my hinny guys... I wish. ha.. ha... ha..ha..ha.. I have been a bit busy though as I sold my saw early this week.. running my wife to appointments and got involved in a TS safety thread on another channel.
OK Monkeyman (must be related to me), I will separate the truth from fiction. I have the 18" SC BS. My smaller saw is a Jet I purchased years ago and I kept it to keep small blades on so I didn't have to switch. So.. I have seen the 14" Steel City on many occasions.. but have not run stock through as yet. It is very solid as all the Steel City BS's and the riser block is a must if you want to re-saw. I can tell you that the granite top is flat. Flat enough you can put some sand-paper on it and use it for scary sharp.
I have not compared the Steel City 14" side by side with a Grizzly yet.. but I will in about 3 weeks at the International WW Show here in Atlanta. As a matter of fact, I found out today I will be at the Show the week before it starts helping a manufacturer set up their booth. And I will be there the entire of the week demo'ing in that manufacturer' booth.
I won't say which manufacturer but.. I can tell you I will be real close to the Steel City display booth. And close enough I can run a ton of stock through that BS in a 4 day period. And they even want me to wear the manufacturers official Show attire.
I am hard on clothes and will do my best to wear them out in 5 days as it's my nature to get down and dirty.. but I was assured by the president of the particular manufacturer that all official company attire has a full 5 Year Warranty just as their machines.
And there might be some new stuff released we don't know about? Just a guess mind you... Hey.. it don't get any better than that for a dumb country boy from Georgia.
See ya at the show I hope... if you can figure out where I am going to be.. just think of me and drop by if you happen to be in the City...
Sarge..
Dumb , Like a fox. Have fun at the show Sarge. Hope the wife in feeling well.
Tom.
I have to push that dumb thing, Tom. I'm hoping that some of these gov't agencies will catch wind and set me up for some dumb senior living assitance program and send someone to cut my grass each week so I won't have to leave the shop at all. ha.. ha... ha..ha..ha..
Sarge..
Thanks for the info. It would be interesting to hear about your comparison of the SC and Grizzly band saws.
I'm curious also.. I looked at the Grizzlie's two years ago at IWF and at that time the comparison wasn't that good. But... Grizzly has made some changes that might alter that. I just don't know until I actually see them on the same floor.
Will probably get to do that even though I will be busy.. but that was one of my priorities before committing to acutally working the Show.
Regards...
Sarge..
