I believe I’m going to need a steady rest to turn a back post on a Windsor Chair. This post is about 1″ diameter and 25″ long with some cuttings as thin as 1/2″.
I have a Powermatic 3520B and would like to know of a good steady rest that will fit and be easy to move around.
Thanks,
Tim

Tim ,
I made this one 30 years ago for the same reason , I had to turn a Windsor style back spindle . One fabricated in metal would be even better .
I think the nuts and bolts and bearings in total cost under $15.00 and it is a fun thing to make .
There our plenty of steady rests on the market , factory and after market brands as well .

I'm not so sure a metal one would be better than the one Dusty made and his has the advantage of the bearings being swappable to rests of different configurations.

Hi d ,
The lathe I had when I made the thing was smaller so I just drilled some new holes in the post when I got a larger lathe .
The steel bearings do leave some road rash but it sands out. The urethane next
I saw one in a catalog , that looked about the same except it was like like 3/8 or 1/2' plate .

I bought the Oneway spindle steady and it is great! I just looked at it though and the price has gone through the roof! I think both Woodcraft and Rockler now carry it.

In what region do you live ?
I ended up buying the bowl steady that you can switch out on the same post -- it also works great.
I am just outside of Dallas, Texas in Heath. Getting ready for some rain from Ike. All of the roads are full of Houston folks!

Cover up your tools and hang on
We will be fine because we are so far away but they say we may loose power which would ruin a perfectly good Saturday in the shop!
