Doing my first handcut dovetail joints in a while, and was wondering if any of you have any tips for cleanly starting a saw cut. I always seem to wander around a bit before getting “in the groove”. Any differences in technique between end grain and cross grain? Japanese vs western saws?

Don,
FWIW, I prefer Western style saws. I start my cuts on the edge using my thumb as the guide then "level" the saw. The first few strokes I make are started with the heel, using the weight of the saw.

*By starting at the heel do you mean that you use a pull stroke to get the initial line?
