I would like to establish a selling price for my stanley #55 (fine woodworking, jan/feb 2000) in excellent condition which includes a full set of 52 cutters in their original boxes with their original labels, misc. accessories, all in a chestnut case – any feedback?

Set your opening bid at $300. It will bring a good bit more than that if it's in the condition you say it is.
If you're selling it outright and not on EBay then I'd say $400 to $450 assuming the plating and everything is in really nice shape, the plane has all the nickers, both sets of arms, the cam steady, etc - virtually everything that would have shipped when the plane was new.

If the chestnut case is the original and if everything is in good condition, then maybe $400+.
If you sell it on Ebay, then set a Reserve price high, say $300 or more. Then set the starting price low. That way more people might get interested in bidding. But, if the final price is less than the reserve price, then it's your option to sell it or not sell it. If it goes for more than the reserve price, then you are obligated to sell it at the final auction price.
Reserve price - the seller 'reserves' the right to refuse bids lower than this price.
Take lots of real good pics for Ebay.
Go to Ebay and search 'completed' auctions for "Stanley 55 plane".

If the chestnut case is the original one, it may go higher. Maybe 550 to 700. Must be in excellent condition to fetch the higher dollars. The original boxes are often what sets apart the top level prices from all the others. I would check some tool dealers and keep an eye on ebay to find comparables.
the stanley 55 is posted on ebay and listed under; garden, tools, hand tools, planes and also under antiques, other antiques - thanks for you feedback!
If you sell it on Ebay, make sure your auction ends on a Sunday. Sunday is plane junkie day, and 85% of all planes listed sell that day. You will be able to take full advantage of several bidders at the end of the auction, all trying to snipe each other.

I don't know why you sent this to me, I did not reply to your post.
Jeff
So, did you list it on e-bay?
I'm more of a hand tool guy than a computer guy - I'm getting help setting up the ebay stuff - I'm shooting for an oct 20 date - thanks!

Doug
