Hi All,
I’m building an entertainment center that is really two large sets of drawers/shelves that go on either side of the big screen. I’ve had a bunch of black walnut in my shop for several years and figured I would use that for edging and mouldings and use plywood for the carcase and shelves. My walnut is quite a bit darker than the ply and has a tinge of red to it. Has anybody tried staining plywood like this to match? What should I try first? Thanks for any help.

Rick,
FWIW, back in the late 80s I accepted a commission where the client wanted the pieces (built in Cherry cabinets) to match the 30 year old slab Cherry mantle. It took me almost 60 hours of experimentation to get a match. I promised myself I would never do such a thing again, a promise that has remained unbroken.
Since you don't mention what the face veneers of the ply are, my only recommendation would be to edge band with wood of the same type and possibly use the walnut as contrasting accents for the applied mouldings. FWIW

*Thanks Dano,That's sort of what I was afraid of. The face veneers are walnut also. I'll try and get my supplier to tell me if it is any particular subspecies. Maybe I can buy wood with a better color match if I know that.rw
*Dano,60 hours. OUCH!! And I thought I was spending too much time on the "Brown Mahogany" color for the buffett. (Staining cherry black). I lucked out and found that color straight from a can that came close to the existing cherry on the walls of the lobby. But it still took a lot of explaining that every piece of wood is different and cherry turns with exposure to UV rays etc.Not much scrap cherry laying around my shop.Jack.
