A woodworker friend of mine made a violin from a kit. The wood is spruce. He wants it to look darker, such as mahogany, Google Sites don’t say anything about staining a violin. Do any of you finishing and/or music experts know if staining/dying spruce will affect it’s sound. Any help will be appreciated.

James,
If I remember correctly, violin varnishes are tinted to help achieve the desired finish. I don't remember anything about stains. Try googling "violin varnish" and maybe you will find something.
Best!

Thanks for the help!

Check out this video I produced on making a violin. The last minute touches on the staining and finishing process but it should give you some good Google keywords for you to continue on your hunt for more in depth info...
