I’ve just made a unit where I stained it with an oil base stain, let it set for a week and then applied the General Finish as the top coat which is water base. The problem, between the second and third coat I’ve lightly sanded with 600 wet&dry where the stain is coming through — ever so lightly. So, do I just have to keep applying additional coats? Or should I have sprayed a one pound coat of shellac then go to the General Finish?

Pita, my first guess is the oils in the stain have not dried or cured. If it were mine, I'd removed my finish and slap on a washcoat of shellac (Sealcoat). I've never been a fan of water based over top of oil base, but that's just me.
thanks, I think this is going to be my last project mixing oil & water.
Pita, Flexner just wrote an interesting treatise on stains for Pop.Wood. He talked about the many ways stains may backfire. I can't remember them all but he mentioned manufacturer's improper batch mixture, cool temperatures, wrong kind of oil used in batch, etc. that could cause a stain not to stablize. If I can locate the article, I'll forward it to you.
Here it is. I found it!
