Hi Gary,
I’m trying to make a shooting board, and after construction and trying the first cut, I’m finding I’m not getting a square cut. I’ve fettled with squaring my fence. It seems square but my plane cuts are producing top corners a bit less than 90 degrees and angling off to the right. I am wondering if my planing technique is off. The plane seems to rock back slightly when it contacts the board being squared, perhaps shaving more off the lower corner than the top corner. What am I doing wrong? And how square does it need to be? Am I trying too hard here, or am I getting it wrong?
Thanks

Dan,
It's not the fault of your shooting board. Don't throw it into the hearth.
It's your hand plane that is to blame. First check to see if the sides are flat. This could be the cause of the rocking you describe. They should also be square to the sole of the plane. But flat is more important.
Because you can and should adjust your iron to cut square. So no matter if the body of the plane or the shooting board is a little out of square adjust your plane iron to be right. Use the lateral adjusting lever or tap the iron with a hammer to make it right. Square is important but make the adjustments in the hand plane. Good luck. Gary
Thanks Gary, I'll try that.
