Hi All: Is there a basic difference in function between the Harris type and the Boggs type of spokeshaves? I have several Harris shaves which I have not had much success using. I’ve seen pictures of a spokeshave putting out long shavings, I’ve never gotten anything like that. Could be technique or sharpening or does one type work better?
Thanks, KDM

The Harris shaves are "traditional" wooden shaves with a "traditional" blade depth adjustment method. The Boggs shaves are more modern cast construction. There are differences in the blade bedding angles besides the material.
I have one Harris and one L-N shave, besides about a half dozen Stanleys and a few other wooden shaves. Some are flat bottom and a few have a radiused bottom. I get nice shavings from all that are set up to be used (a couple just collect dust).
As with any handtool familiarity is the key to results. You got to use them! With the Harris, the depth of blade is critical to success--you cannot hog material!
