Anyone out there (besides me) have the sunhill spiral cutter head. I purchased one for my jointer and am in love. It cuts so smooth, I can use it to joint plywood. Not only that, it is half as loud as the knife blades…. I sound like a salesman!
I will be buying another for my 15″ powermatic planer as soon as I become rich and famous (or maybe just rich). The cost is over $750.00 but worth it . Anyone had a problem with these cutters?

Yes, I have the same cutter. Welcome to the club. Isn't it great?!
If I had a 15" planer, I'd buy the spiral cutter for it. I have a 16" planer, and that cutter is double the price of the 15". Go figure...

Jeff - does a spiral cutterhead for the planer have the same noise reducing effect? -Tom
What is the most difficult wood you have jointed with the Byrd and how did it turn out in comparison to a straight blade? Would you say your sanding efforts before finishing have decreased? No complaints of scallops? I have been toying with the idea of one for a while now due to my problems milling some jatoba of late and am waiting for the return of some test stock my rep is doing up for me before purchasing one.

I got the Byrd cutter last year. I'm not a professional woodworker; I don't even play one on TV. The time I have available for woodworking is limited, so I'd rather spend the time I have working wood and not setting blades. It used to drive me nuts. That alone makes it worthwhile. As far as decreased sanding goes, I'd say sort of..... My old blades seemed to always have a chip, so I'd have to sand or scrape out the resulting ridge. Absent that, I'd say the cut is better than the straight blades, but not perfect. I've jointed several different figured woods. The Byrd cutter produces far less tearout than the straight blades.

Did you at least stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I am not a pro either, just a little more cautious buying high end items such as this. I think it would help in my case, but I think in the end a small wide belt will be a better solution. If only I had the space now.
