I have an older fixed speed Porter Cable 7519 router. I have wondered if I could convert this to a variable speed PC 7518, by replacing the ‘soft switch’ circuitry with a new variable speed circuitry? Anyone try this?

You'd probably be better off with an external speed controller. You can get one from places like Rockler or Woodcraft for around $40.

I have tried one controller and it did not work with the 'soft start' circuitry in this router. Perhaps there is another type of external controller, but the one I bought at Woodcraft did not work. Thanks!
Ah, sorry. I didn't notice the mention of soft start in your original message.

Theoretically it will work, but the trick would be in fitting the new circuit board into the router and presumably cutting a whole in the case for the speed control knob, neither of which might be practical.
You can use the Woodcraft speed control, just remove or wire around the soft start circuit board eliminating the circuitry so that the switch still works but it will now be a "hard" start. With the internal electronics eliminated the variable speed control will now work.

John,
Thanks, I sorta thought that might work. I will try that now.
