Hello,
My name is Bill and I am a high school student currently working on a 18th style secretary desk. I have been searching all over trying to find a specific piece of hardware. This piece opens the pulls automatically as the drop down door is lowered. If anyone has ever used, knows where to buy or even knows the name of this hardware, I would greatly appreciate a reply.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,
Not sure that I specifically understand the type of hardware you are looking for...
But if you are looking for 18th century hardware I can point you to some manufactures.. Maybe you will see what you are looking for. Ball and Ball would be my first choice very high quality, but beware the quality comes at a cost.. http://www.ballandball.com, Horton Brass is another good source at http://www.hortonbrass.com and finally Londonderry Brass at http://www.londonderry-brasses.com
Good luck
Bob
He is looking for a mechanical device that opens the arms as you open the lid and bring it down. This is a 20th century adaptation for folks who forget to pull the arms out before they open the lid. For some its a good safety precaution.
Ball and Ball do not carry these and neither does Horton. They are focused on mostly 18th century stuff.

Dan,Now that I understand the type of hardware the OP was looking for, I would agree that it would be pretty unlikely the three sources I gave would have this type of hardware, since they focus on 18th century reproductions (although I am still surprised Horton did not have the item)...

Its something I have only seen on reproductions(economy level stuff). In the past, I have made the parts for repairs from sheet metal. About the only thing that goes wrong with them is a rivet breaks or a slight bend in the scissors assembly needs to be straightened. They really are a clever little gizmo but they sure didn't exist on the stuff you're building.
Another question: I have found Ball and Ball getting on the expensive side so I have ordered some common stuff from Ball and Ball and Horton. I can't tell much difference other than the price. Horton has been a bit cheaper. Unfortunately, I think Ball's locks are superior and I have to suck in the cost. Wondering what your cut might be or any others on this topic.

I am personally a very big fan of Horton. They have been extremely kind to our program at my high school and have even gone so far as to offer all participants of the program free hardware. The quality is fantastic and the people are even nicer. They have even gone as far as to place many of my schools projects of their website. I would recommend them to any and everyone. I have not yet recieved this years hardware, but I did order three different locks for my project and would have to think that the quality of the locks would be just as high as that of their knobs, pulls and hinges.

That's great to hear. I too am a high school teacher and I do a bunch of work on cabinets and furniture with the students. I was unaware of Horton's support for high schoolers and I must confess we have turned away from some projects due to cost over-run. I have bought lots of stuff from Horton over the years and like you, I have been very pleased. Horton and Ball and Ball are first class operations.
