Besides large retailers like Harbor Freight or Northern Tool, where can I find a small 1/4 hp woodworking motor?
Thanks,
Brian

new or used?
1/4 HP is pretty small. An old trim router or drill motor if used is OK.
What are going to use it for?

A benchtop drum sander that I saw at the Woodworking show; requires a 1/4hp motor to spin the 2" dia. x 18" L drum.
eBay
1/4 HP motors regularly turn up used at sites like craigslist, estate sales, tag sales, local ads, etc. A washing machine motor will work. Be aware of the RPM that your machine wants since your pulley selection may have to change depending on what you get.
Avoid universal motors out of power tools as they will generally deliver much less HP than their rating and they're very noisy. Some such as router motors are designed for very high RPM.

I know Grizzly caries quite a few, not sure if they go down to 1/4hp. http://www.grizzly.com
Grainger also carries tons of motors. grainger.com

Curb-side pick-up. Lots of good motors tossed out when people upgrade their heating systems. Check with your local heating/ AC repairman. Maybe they can save you one or two motors.

If you have a Tractor Supply Company store near you, they carry a selection of motors. Lee Valley also sells a 1/4 HP motor for use with their micro lathes.

A 1/2 hp motor will work just as well and will probably be easier to find and possibly cheaper.

Many appliance stores, when they sell a washer, dryer etc. will take the old junk one. A good many of these still have a good motor that the store would give you. They would probably be more than 1/4 HP. Would that hurt?
Penn State has a really nice ½ HP kit for $99 + S&H. And it comes with variable speed if that's desirable.
