Greetings,
I’m new to wood-working, a hobbyist at best. I was wondering if anyone knew a good source for lumber in the Birmingham, AL area? I’m not currently looking for any specific type, but I doubt Lowe’s and Home Depot are the best source for anything other than sheetgoods.
If you’re not from the area and have any suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks,
Curt M.

Thanks,
The closest location it pulled up is 176 miles away. Any other suggestions?
How does woodcraft stack up on price?
Marti,
Not sure if there's a woodcraft in B-ham, but I have been to the one in Mobile quite a few times. The prices are a bit high on some things and reasonable on others. There is probably about 30 - 100 bf of each species in stock, sometimes more.
Not my first choice, but if you can't find anything else, I guess it's not too bad.

Hardwood Center, 157 Dick Hayes Road, Scottsboro, AL 35768; Phone: (256)259-9648; fax: (256)259-3544; Email: [email protected]; Web Site: http://www.HardwoodCenter.comTheir prices aren't near the fellow in Harvest. Poplar starts just above $2, Goncalo Alves was around $11 last time I was there on July 27, 2006. There are a couple of dealers in Huntland TN also.Cadiddlehopper
I live just North of Mobile, I know the problem. Look through the free advertising newspapers. If you can live with air dried lumber, there are a lot of guys with woodmizers selling lumber all over the state. You might even be lucky enough to fine someone with a kiln - - if you do, let me know ;-)
If you're willing to drive to Huntsville, I know of three or four sources. My favorite is a local sawmill that you can get kiln-dried cherry, walnut, maple, or whatever else he has on hand for about $1.50 b.f.
I just did a yahoo yellow pages search and came up with 12 lumber places in Birmingham. Somebody on that list is probably a good source.

Ernie,
do you mind giving out the info on that sawmill you refer to?
Thanks,
Scott
The name is H & K Sawmill in Harvest, AL. It is owned by Jim Kisner, cell 256-682-6986. You might want to call first, since he is only there Wed-Sat and his inventory changes frequently. I can usually find a good selection of Cherry and Poplar and on a good day, walnut and maple. Basically, any tree that grows locally, he'll have in his stock.I've attached a map. From Birmingham, go I65 north to Athens. At US72, head east to County Line Road. Left on County Line, left on Capshaw, right on Sanderson, Left on Nick Davis. If you see the Limestone County Prison, just past that on Nick Davis on the left is H&K.Ernie

Ernie,
thanks very much. My in-laws live in Hunstville so we are up that way quite a bit.

Marti -
Take another look at Home Depot's hardwood. I can't remember the name of the distributor, but I've had very good luck with their dimensioned Oak, Birch and Poplar. My biggest complaint is a really annoying sticker that can be almost impossible to remove so I have to plan my cuts carefully so they wind up in the scrap pile - lol.
I've also pretty much given up on HD's sheet stock. A couple of years ago, I got some nice looking maple plywood that had some serious voids in it. Then, they wouldn't let me return it because....."you've cut it".
Fortunately, I can get cabinet-grade ply at a local cabinet supply place for just a few dollars more per sheet.
