I posted the link below in the Panel Gone Wrong thread started by marti038.
Some visitors to the forum may find the discussion of solid wood panel construction considerations useful or helpful in their work. By starting a new thread I hope the information will reach a wider audience than it might achieve in the Panel Gone Wrong thread.
What you will find at the link is an edited and truncated version of a larger illustrated text I have created that is intended for print publication at some point in the future.
Oh yeah, I suppose I ought to say something like Merry Christams for those of that celebrate it. Slainte.

Richard,
Well a very Happy New Year to ye then, ye Scrooge! :-)

That article is good stuff, as are many of the others you have in your growing list. In fact, they are so useful that I have forgiven you for writing that daft one about sharpening. (I would have that auld Scotsman up for apprentice-abuse).
I am looking forward to more of your articles, especially on the design-front. At this rate I can save myself a few thousand quids as I won't have to enrol at Leeds. ;-/
Lataxe, a willing student.
Apprentice abuse is good for the constitution of know-it-all, work-shy young sprogs Lataxe-- and a need to pay the rent at my bedsit each week, purchase tools, and even buy food kept this daft wee eighteen year old turning up each day. Underneath that man's gruff exterior was actually a heart of gold. It took a while to find it, but it was there. Slainte.Richard Jones Furniture
Lataxe ,
Have you had a chance to see the newest FWW mag pictorial on Greene and Greene style ? Try it on line if you can't see the mag . The A&C look depicted is sooooo what I will be making as I can . The exposed joints of the drawers in person are the real deal .
QSWO panels just un clamped

Richard, great work on that link, love the illustrations.

As Lataxe pointed out earlier, I also enjoyed your bit on sharpening. I must tell you, however, that at least in the USA, the young wannabe's won't put up with the same gruff from the knowledgeable elders that we endured. They simply quit. No tolerance for intolerance, I suppose.
Happy New Year to you, too, if you celebrate it...hahaha!

Richard ,
That's a great write on panels , so many problems arise for no good reasons.
It should be a mandatory read for all of us even if for a reminder .
I just glued up QSWO top and side panels for a smallish case ,and the boards were narrow but beautiful, so the grain and widths were used for best looks # 1 and yield was a close second . How can we use this fine wood and turn the best side in , no way .
Yup , they do still sell by grade at the cabinet suppliers all I had too choose from on hand was # 1 common / narrows , this supplier has proprietary grades besides the real grades , yeah they make them up hygrade the units pull the widths out and call it S & B but the narrows won't meet the width standards. There was substantial savings per foot , so I bought more .
You mention a slot screw bar that mounts under an intersection , on a plywood bottom and solid sides housed ,do you slot the holes that screw into the solid side pieces but glue it to a ply bottom ? What sort of dimension is the bar ?Any pictures ?
cheers dusty
