I think you've answered yer own question...but with glue, apply it at only a couple points, each end, or at the middle. Essentially the cherry moves, but not the ply.
Expert since 10 am.
Personally, I wouldn't glue it at all. I come from underneath with some free moving screws or lags. And I would never glue it two places: if any, in the very middle only!

I think fasteners are the right choice. The wood movement issue keeps me away from glue since this will be a piece in the bedroom. If it were something that was going to get abused I might be tempted to go the glue route. Thanks!
